Our Sculptors Exhibitions
This exhibition explores the untold stories and rich experiences of South Asian mothers and how they navigate the complex tapestry of identity through the lens of motherhood
Through intimate conversations with 26 South Asian mothers from the UK, Saroj Patel inquired how histories, traditions, and culture have shaped their identities, and the active role they play in embracing and teaching their cultural heritage to their children. The artist discovered how these extraordinary women are breaking boundaries, venturing into unexplored territories, and crafting new narratives for South Asian women.
In addition to presenting the narratives of South Asian women, this exhibition delves into the intimate aspects of Saroj’s personal connection with her mother, Sushila, who was born and raised in Gujarat, India. Aged 19, she embarked on a transformative journey, migrating to the UK and becoming a mother to three children by the time she turned 22. Despite facing challenges marked by struggle, loneliness, and conflict, Sushila’s stories are woven together with threads of resilience and courage. Much like numerous women of her era, her experiences have become a source of inspiration to the succeeding generation, motivating them to forge new opportunities and construct more inclusive futures for themselves and their children.
For this exhibition Sushila has composed a song ‘Ocean of Emotions’ which has been inspired by the conversations Saroj has had with South Asian mothers.
Ocean Mother is a celebration of heritage and the enduring power of maternal stories, resonating across generations and weaving into the fabric of our shared human experience.
